The “Leokino 1” got the biggest auditorium within the cinemas of the
“Otto-Preminger-Institute”. Its screen is slightly bend, following the
later recommendations for 70mm installations and still amazing with a
visual difference to the flat screens of today.
Two 35/70-projectors are housed in the wide projection room. They are
Todd-AOs original Philips DP70 and
with the serial numbers 2286 and 2289 two of the latest production. A
sophisticated control system - a in house development - is supporting
the projectionist with frame accurate changeover and sound format
control - but without the necessity to put foil onto film parts that are
projected. The two projector changeover system is working without a
platter. The print runs through, facing the well proven 'reel to reel',
but improved by a modern winding system, being capable to handle up to
2000m.
Not only all common 35mm image and sound formats can be presented, also
the various 70mm formats are supported the right way. Original Philips
sound heads - still in good condition - are picking up the magnetic
sound information. A Dolby MPU fully stuffed with Cat. No. 92, reworked
and calibrated by SCS (Scherer Cinema Systems) for reliable and improved
performance, is doing the standard equalizing and preamplifying. Next
link in the chain is the SCS6051 analogue sound processing unit, which
allows the 5-channel front sound to be reproduced by the Dolby CP500
digital sound processor, having every channel to appear at the right
position of the screen. The sound is blown from the stage by THX
certified Variplex-B three-way systems, supported by JBL subwoofers,
driven by P1250 and P2000 EV power amplifiers.
The latest 70mm-prints are shipped with dts digital sound. These prints
are presented using a 6D-SV dts sound processor. Beside the standard
5-channel digital sound, the supported 'special venue' feature allows
full 6-channel playback, restoring the original Todd-AO sound layout in
the auditorium.
