Compiled by: Michael Coate Date: 21.09.2017
The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter engagements of “Amadeus” in North America. The film’s 70mm prints consisted of full-frame imagery blown up from anamorphic 35mm photography. The audio was Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“A” encoded “baby boom” format).

“Amadeus” was among sixteen confirmed first-run films released in 1984 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The Saul Zaentz Company production and Orion release — directed by Milos Forman and starring F. Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce — opened exclusively in a 70mm limited release on September 19th.

The world premiere of “Amadeus” was held September 6th at the Coronet in Los Angeles. As well, invitational previews were held September 10th at the Samuel Goldwyn in Beverly Hills and September 12th in New York (cinema undetermined).

For the release of “Amadeus”, Orion employed the services of Lucasfilm’s Theater Alignment Program (TAP) to evaluate and approve the cinemas selected to book a 70mm print.

Trailers for “The Cotton Club” and “Secret Admirer” circulated with the “Amadeus” prints and which the distributor recommended be screened with the presentation.
