“Gone with the Wind”: The North American 70mm Re-Release Engagements

The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter re-release presentations of “Gone with the Wind” in North America. The film’s 70mm prints featured re-framed “tilt-and-scan” full-frame imagery and re-mixed six-track stereophonic sound. (The 1939 film — directed by Victor Fleming and starring Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard and Olivia de Havilland — was originally produced in 1.37:1 Academy format with monaural audio.)

These were “hard ticket” roadshow engagements (except where noted otherwise) and were special, long-running, showcase presentations in major cities prior to the film being exhibited as a general release, and they featured advanced admission pricing, reserved seating, an overture/intermission/entr’acte/exit music, and an average of only ten scheduled screenings per week. Souvenir program booklet were sold, as well.

Out of the hundreds of films released and re-released during 1967, “Gone with the Wind” was among only eight that were given deluxe roadshow treatment and among only five to be released with 70mm prints.
