 50 Jahre TODD-AO Das Grosse 70mm Filmfestival October 7-9, 2005 The beautiful Filmtheater Schauburg in Karlsruhe, Germany, is a great place to visit and see a film! It’s especially wonderful if you like films in the greatest format ever: 70mm. You won’t have to wait too long to see a 70mm film as they run 70mm screenings throughout the year. I attended the 70mm-festival in October 2005 and I have only one word to say: FANTASTIC!!! During the festival they showed 10 full-length movies plus 2 short movies: Fanny’s Wedding and A Year Along The Abandoned Road. Also, they had a very instructive and inspiring lecture by Mr. 70mm himself, Thomas Hauerslev. The first evening ended with a “get together” in the beautiful foyer. This included a couple of beers and lots of chatting with old and new friends. We received the Festival programme filled with lots of interesting reading and during the intermission of the gala screening of My Fair Lady a delicious glass of Sekt. In addition to watching the classic films, we got the Festival poster, two 70mm “film frames”, a great exhibition of posters and lobby cards from the 70mm era and we, of course, enjoyed the big breakfast buffet in the foyer. All this for €65.00! Of the 10 films, 7 were beautifully restored: Patton, The Agony and the Ecstasy, Hello, Dolly!, Doctor Dolittle, Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines, The Sound of Music and 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was like going to one premiere after the other in the good old days and on a big, curved screen. What more can you ask for! Of course, we also enjoyed the classic but a little faded Airport, My Fair Lady and David Lean’s masterpiece, Ryan’s Daughter (I can’t wait for the DVD-release on February 7, 2006!) How many theatres can do a festival like this today? Thank you all very much at the wonderful Filmtheater Schauburg!!! You did a great job and I hope to see you next year. image to see enlargementVielen Dank für denn herzlichen und netten Empfang in ihrem Hause. Es war ein Gutes und liebevoll ins Detail geplantes Festival. Es war für mich ein Wunderbares Erlebnis diese Filme mal in 70mm auf der großen Bildwand in einem wunderschönem Kino zu sehen zu bekommen. Einige Titel kannte ich nur von Fernseher oder in 35mm aus kleineren Kinos. Ich bin der Hoffnung daß es noch weitere Festivals dieser Art geben wird. Da aber Kosten und Aufwand groß sind habe ich auch Verständnis dafür wenn es Einmalig war. Vielen Dank auch an die zwei Herren der Projektion für die guten Vorstellungen und an die Damen und Herren vom Service. It was a wonderful experience to see these films in 70mm on a big screen in a wonderful cinema. A few titles I have only seen on TV or in 35mm on smaller screens. I hope very much, that there will be further festivals of this kind. I know very well the big costs and great efforts, therefore I could understand if there will be no more festival.  Gäbe es einen deutschen Filmpreis für die beste Präsentation
in einem deutschen Kino, so ginge dieser ganz gewiss an die SCHAUBURG.Ich hätte es wirklich nicht für möglich gehalten, eine derart phantastische Qualität in einem deutschen Kino erleben zu dürfen! Das Todd-AO-Festival wird mir stets in guter Erinnerung bleiben. Nicht nur die tollen, überwiegend neuen 70mm-Kopien (allen voran "HELLO DOLLY!") waren allererste Sahne, auch die Art und Weise, wie die alten Hollywood-Klassiker präsentiert wurden. Und dazu noch das stimmige Ambiente, das während der Pausen zu interessanten Gesprächen animierte. Nicht zu vergessen das gigantische Frühstücksbuffet, das keine Wünsche offen ließ. Dass eine solche Veranstaltung eine Fortsetzung verlangt, ist logisch. Ich würde mir das jedenfalls sehr wünschen und freue mich daher schon mal präventiv auf das nächste Jahr. Well done, keep going! I had never thought that it would be possible to see such a fantastic quality in a German cinema! The TODD-AO festival will always stay in my good memory. Not only the great, almost new, 70mm prints (especially "HELLO DOLLY!") were first class, also the way these Hollywood classics were presented was great. In addition, the unique ambience of the cinema generates nice talks between the shows. Not to forget the gigantic breakfast buffet, which included everything you could ask for.  Sehr geehrter Herr Born,Ich habe seit ca.30 Jahren keinen Film mehr in 70mm sehen können. So war dieses Festival nach langer Zeit eine Gelegenheit, hier Nachholbedarf zu befriedigen. Auch als Gast konnte man das enorme Arbeitspensum bzw. den Organisationsaufwand erkennen, den Sie mit Ihren Mitarbeitern geleistet haben. Dafür sei Ihnen allen gedankt! Das ganze Ambiente eines großen Kinopalastes überzeugte. Kino wurde im besten Sinne des Wortes zelebriert: der sich langsam öffnende Samtvorhang vor der stark gekrümmten Bildwand war ein Erlebnis! (Kommen Sie bitte nie auf die üble Idee, diese wunderbare Bildwand abzuflachen! Nur die starke Wölbung bringt es!) Herrlich - wie in den 60ern- war der Öffnungseffekt bei den "Tollkühnen Männern...": Zunächst nur das kleine 1:1,35-Schwarzweißbild geöffnet,dann ab einem bestimmten Augenblick Vorhang langsam auf und die untere Bildmaske abgesenkt. Ein Erlebnis! Ich hoffe, Sie bringen das Festival im nächsten Jahr zur 2. Auflage. Wir werden diesmal wohl in größerer Zahl wiederkommen. Dieter Connemann, Osnabrück For 30 years I have not had a chance to see a movie in 70mm. This festival gave me the opportunity to satisfy my needs. Even as a guest, we could still see the enormous work and organisation you and your staff had. Thank you very much! The whole ambience of a big cinema worked. “Cinema” was in the best manner celebrated: the slowly opening of the curtain in front of the curved screen was a real pleasure! (Please never have the fatal idea to build in a flat screen! Only the curve shows!) Wonderful, like in the 60’s, was the nice opening effect at "THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN …". In the beginning only the small 1:1,35 black and white frame showed up, but suddenly … the curtain opens and the upper frame went down. What a show! I hope, next year will be a 2nd festival.  Hallo Herr Born,nachdem ich gut wieder zu Hause angekommen war, möchte ich mich noch einmal ganz herzlich für das tolle 70-mm-Wochenende bedanken. Für mich war das seit den 70-er Jahren, wo es ja in der DDR mehrere 70-mm-Filmtheater gab, die dann irgendwann einmal sang- und klanglos wieder verschwanden, das erste Mal, dass ich wieder 70 mm erleben durfte. Wenn Sie wieder einmal so etwas geplant haben, können Sie mir gern eine kurze Nachricht senden. Sicher werde ich nicht jedes Mal kommen können und wegen einzelner Filme ist der Aufwand ohnehin zu hoch, aber bei passender Gelegenheit würde ich Sie gern wieder besuchen.  Ein grosses Lob an das ganze Schauburg-Team! Ihr habt euch wirklich viel
Mühe gegebens und es war einfach klasse! Es war sicherlich nicht alles 100%
perfekt, aber insgesamt ein echt tolles Wochenende! Hat mir wirklich grossen
Spass gemacht. Meine absoluten Favoriten: "The Agony and The Ecstasy",
"Hello
Dolly" und "The Sound Of Music". Ich finde es
bewundernswert, dass es in
Deutschland tatsächlich noch Kinobetreiber gibt, die wissen was
"Showmanship" bedeutet! Ich hoffe sehr, dass dieses Event auch im nächsten

guest Tony Blair aka Mr. Mark Lipniacki from London.We flew into Baden Baden / Karlsruhe, the most perfect kind of airport, small and efficient. After a hair raising, high-speed taxi ride we arrived in Karlsruhe one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. At the heart of the city is the Schauburg theatre, an architectural gem, which features state of the art sound equipment as well as the famous DP70 projector and deeply curved screen, so vital for a genuine Todd-AO presentation. The view from the front row, the ultimate test for focus and clarity in projection, was fantastic. We enjoyed a crystal clear and sharply focussed projected image throughout. The impact of "Patton" was awesome; such was the resolution of the image that the gauze backing of George C Scott's false eyebrows was clearly visible in the opening scene. Vintage items such as "Ryan's Daughter" and "My Fair Lady" fared surprisingly well with the added and intriguing bonus of outstanding dubbing into German. Eliza Doolittle was transformed into a feisty Berliner; "Hello, Dolly!" looked truly stunning on the big curve. There was no question that the image quality was vastly superior to modern standards; a recent screening we saw of the latest "Harry Potter" made it all too obvious. The highlight of the weekend for many was a sparkling screening of a new print of that awesome legend and cinematic juggernaut, "The Sound of Music". Beyond any kind of critique, it held the audience spellbound. It is worth noting that there is a Danish connection. Christopher Plummer had stunned millions of viewers with a magisterial performance of "Hamlet", broadcast live from the castle of Elsinore [Helsingør, ed], a climax to the four hundredth anniversary celebrations of the birth of Shakespeare. It landed him the role of Von Trapp. The Widescreen Weekend ended with a screening of "2001 - A Space Odyssey" - as mind blowing as ever. Herbert Born, the director of the festival, can take much pride in a superbly organised Festival, an all too rare opportunity to witness the greatest stories ever told on screen. klappeauf.de Vor 50 Jahren brachte 20th Century Fox den ersten 70mm-Film in die Kinos. Es war das Musical „Oklahoma“ . Das Verfahren, das nicht nur optisch, sondern auch - mit sechs getrennten magnetischen Tonspuren - akustisch alles bisher Dagewesene in den Schatten stellte, wurde Todd-AO genannt, nach seinem Erfinder, dem Filmproduzenten Mike Todd, der das System zusammen mit American Optics (AO) entwickelt hatte. Todd, nebenbei dritter Ehemann von Filmdiva, Elisabeth Taylor, kam 1958 bei einem Flugzeugunglück ums Leben. Das Todd-AO-Verfahren überlebte zwar seinen Erfinder, doch der große Durchbruch stellte sich nicht ein. Zu aufwändig war das Verfahren sowohl bei der Kopienherstellung als auch bei der technischen Aufrüstung. Die Karlsruher Schauburg ist als der wenigen Kinos in Deutschland (und wohl auch weltweit) mit 70mm-Projektoren ausgerüstet und im Gegensatz zu anderen Kinos macht sie davon auch regelmäßig Gebrauch. Aus Anlass des 50. Geburtstages des immer noch eindrucksvollsten Filmformats aller Zeiten beglückt die Schauburg Filmfreunde mit einem Todd-AO-Filmfestival der Extraklasse. Auf dem Programm stehen Filmklassiker im XXL-Format. (Wenn nicht anders erwähnt, werden die Filme in Originalfassung gezeigt). Den Anfang macht „Patton“(7., 14 Uhr), das wuchtige Porträt des US-Generals, der zu einer schillerndsten Figuren des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde. Das 170 Minuten-Opus brachte dem Hauptdarsteller George C.Scott und Regisseur Franklin Schaffner je einen Oscar ein. Der auf überlebensgroße Figuren spezialisierte Charlton Heston spielt die Rolle des Renaissance-Genies Michelangelo in „The Agony And The Ectasy“(7., 17.30 Uhr), der opulenten Verfilmung der romanhaften Lebensbeschreibung von Irving Stone. Das Musical „Hello Dolly!“ (7., 20.30 Uhr) machte Barbra Streisand zum Star. Regie führte Tanzlegende Gene Kelly, der diesmal nicht selbst das Tanzbein schwingt. „Ryans Tochter“ (deutsche Fassung 8., 10 Uhr) ist ein melodramatisches Epos von David Lean, dem Macher von „Lawrence von Arabien“ und „Dr.Schiwago“, eingebettet in die irische Landschaft, musikalisch unterfüttert von Maurice Jarre. „Doctor Dolittle“(8., 14 Uhr) ist ein aufwändiges, einfallsreich inszeniertes Musical um einen Tierdoktor (Rex Harrison), der 498 Tiersprachen beherrscht und nach einer Riesen-Meeresschnecke sucht. Rex Harrison spielt auch die Hauptrolle (neben Audrey Hepburn) in dem immergrünen Musical „My Fair Lady“, das am 8. um 20.30 Uhr in deutscher Fassung in einer Gala- Vorstellung gezeigt wird. Abendgarderobe erforderlich. Vorher aber ziehen noch „Those Magnificent Men in the Flying Machines“(8., 17 Uhr) ihre Runden in einem herrlichen Slapstickspaß über die Anfänge der Luftfahrt. „Airport“(9., 14 Uhr) nach dem Roman von Arthur Hailey hat viele Flugzeugkatastrophenfilme nach sich gezogen. Das hier ist das Original. „The Sound of Music“(9., 17 Uhr) erzählt die Geschichte der Trapp-Familie, die auch schon im deutschen Film verewigt wurde, in Form eines Musicals, mit Julie Andrews als Gouvernante, die mit Gesang und Tanz sieben Kinder zur Räson bringt. Der Film, der in den USA ungeheuer populär war, kam bei uns nie so recht an. Den Schlußpunkt setzt Stanley Kubricks „2001: A Space Odyssey“(9., 20.30 Uhr). In einer Sonntagsmatinee (9., 10 Uhr) spricht Thomas Hauerslev, der größte 70mm-Experte über die Anfänge des Todd-AO-Verfahrens. Anschließend sind in Anwesenheit der Regisseure die im 70mm-Format gedrehten Kurzfilme „Fanny´s Wedding“ des Franzosen Olivier Brunet und „A Year Along The Abandoned Road““ des Norwegers Morten Skallerud zu sehen.
