Welcome to the fifteenth edition of the
Todd-AO 70mm-Festival
at the amazing
Schauburg Cinerama in Karlsruhe. The Todd-AO festival is
the "Cannes Film Festival of 7OMM Film", where YOU - the audience -
are the guests of honor. We do not have a red carpet, but we do have a
magnificent staircase. We do not have decadent giant yacht parties and
Champagne, but instead we have good Hoepfner Bräu and German
Gemütlichkeit. And finally, we do not have international film
premieres, but we have a loyal Stammpublikum, who come back year
after year to watch classic films they may have seen many times before. You
can almost hear yourself saying "I am melting", when
the first rays of sunlight hit you after three days in the dark.
Many guests have been here since the beginning in 2005, and almost
regardless of what titles we are presenting, they come back the next
year. We appreciate your loyalty are pleased to learn that the Todd-AO
Festival excites you.
This year we have a collection of mostly old vintage classics, rarely
screened spectacles and a brand new triple OSCAR winner!!! We are excited
and proud to present Alfonso Cuarón's
"Roma" in
black & white 70mm. Photographed digitally in 6K with German camera
equipment from ARRI in Munchen, it will be
one major treat to see how it looks and feels on the big curved screen presented on 70mm
film. Especially since Alfonso Cuarón also won an Oscar in the category
"Best Achievement in Cinematography" besides winning the Oscar for
"Best Achievement in Directing" in
February 2019.
Special welcome goes to Austrian born director James Quinn who we have
invited to Karlsruhe to present his 9 minutes 70mm horror short film
"Daughter of Dismay".
James Quinn will talk about the film after the premiere Sunday morning,
just after breakfast. This is the World Premiere of the 70mm print.
Is Super Panavision 70 better than Todd-AO? Why are pictures sometimes
cropped in a blow-up and does it matter? Why does 70mm look so good?
Well, there will be much to discuss as we present motion pictures
photographed in Arriraw (6,5K), 35mm flat Widescreen, 35mm TechnoVision
Anamorphic, Super 35, Panavision, Todd-AO 35 Anamorphic, 70mm blow-up,
Todd-AO, Super Panavision 70, with MCS 70 Superpanorama and Cinema 180. Motion pictures
by Herzog, Seaton, Hathaway, Cukor, Attenborough, Lean, McTiernan,
Lynch, Cuarón and Coppola. Motion pictures starring Kinski, Lancaster,
Seberg, Hepburn, Mangano, MacLachlan, Sydow, Washington, Miles, Mitchum,
Rickman and Aparicio, and many more. We are going to need a bigger
marquee to fit all those names in. Old classics, and modern adventures -
some in color and some faded "original vintage classics".
Seeing the world in the 2,21:1 perspective of 7OMM on the curved
Schauburg Cinerama screen in authentic 7OMM is unique. We look forward
to take you on a global journey from South Africa to Mexico. From outer
space to the west coast of Ireland. From the city of Gotham to Los
Angeles, and from the war in Vietnam to slave trade in Brazil. And
finally from 27A Wimpole Street in London to the fictional Lincoln
International Airport near Chicago. Rest assured, the usual elements of
the The Todd-AO Festival are also here. The Schauburg beer garden,
festival posters, neon, the bill board,
Hoepfner Bräu, daily
refreshments and food on Friday, Saturday and Sunday - all free with your
Festival Pass. It is a privilege to welcome you to The Todd-AO Festival
2019 in its 15th edition, and we hope you will join us for a BIG
weekend, with a BIG film format on a BIG screen.
Willkommen. Bienvenue. Welcome. Velkommen. Välkomna. Vítejte. Welkom.
Benvenuto. Yokoso. Bienvenida. ...and now, in the glorious vision of the
horizon expanding spectacle of 7OMM, we present - The Entertainment
Experience of a Lifetime!
