The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
presentations of “Hoffa” in North America. The film’s 70mm prints consisted
of letterboxed imagery (approximately 2.39:1) sourced from anamorphic 35mm
photography. The audio for the majority of the 70mm prints was Six-Track
Dolby Stereo (“A” encoded “baby boom” format). A few of the 70mm prints
appear to have been SR-encoded and are noted as such in the listing below.
“Hoffa” was among ten confirmed first-run films released in 1992 with 70mm
prints for selected engagements. The Jersey Films production and 20th
Century Fox release — directed by Danny DeVito and starring Jack Nicholson —
opened December 25th.
For the release of “Hoffa”, Fox employed the services of Lucasfilm’s Theater
Alignment Program (TAP) to evaluate and approve the cinemas selected to book
a 70mm print.
Trailers for “Jack the Bear” and “The Vanishing” circulated with the “Hoffa”
prints and which the distributor recommended be screened with the
presentation.
