The Samuel Goldwyn Co 1982 press release |
Issue 42 - December 1995 |
In a major distribution agreement with the
Rodgers and Hammerstein estate, The Samuel Goldwyn Company has acquired the
U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to the 1955 film version of Rodgers
and Hammerstein's "Oklahoma!" with plans to send the film
back into theatres as a 70mm attraction utilizing six-track stereophonic
sound.
The re-release, to begin in November, will mark the first time
"Oklahoma!"
has been shown in its original form since its
initial
release. First dates
will be in Oklahoma City, to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the state
of Oklahoma, and in Los Angeles. Openings will follow in New York, San
Francisco, Seattle and other key cities.
Major restorations on the film, which has had only limited TV airing and has
been theatrically shown only in 35mm since 1956, was done under the
supervision of Tom Bodley, Goldwyn's director of the film department, in
conjunction with MGM laboratories and Todd-AO. This marks the first time in
20 years that a print has been struck in 70mm, rather than blown up from the
conventional 35mm. The restored version will include the films original
overtures, exit music and intermission.
