our series of historical reference listings of 70mm cinemas.Nineteen ninety-two was the final “big year” for 70-millimeter as an exhibition format, so this particular entry in the series of reference listings focuses on the 1992 calendar year and details the known North American cinemas during that timeframe equipped to project 70mm prints. Of all the entries in this series—1960, 1970, 1985, 2015 - Present - this ’92 listing is the largest and offers a snapshot of the 70mm infrastructure at its peak…right before it all came crashing down. Notably, three overlapping trends contributed to the “death” of 70mm as an exhibition format: (1) digital sound, (2) stadium seating, (3) megaplex theater construction. The 70mm releases dwindled thereafter until the twenty-teens mini renaissance (and none had a huge print run until 2015’s "The Hateful Eight"). Why 1992 and not 1993? Or 1994? Because 1992 was “bigger” than 1993 and ’94 both in number of first-run titles issued in 70mm (ten in ’92 to eight in ’93 to two in ‘94) and in number of 70mm prints struck (’92, in particular, had two titles -“Far and Away” and “Hoffa” - with print runs exceeding 100, whereas ’93 and ’94 had zero titles with a 70mm print run that large). *Two (or more) screens in complex equipped with 70mm capability. Multi-screen complexes consisting of multiple/separate buildings have for the most part been listed in this work as a “single” complex. Generically-named cinemas located in shopping centers have typically been listed with the name of the shopping center. There are no doubt some venues cited in this work that during timeframe studied no longer possessed the ability to screen 70mm because the once-installed gear had been removed and decommissioned or relocated to another venue. However, the still-open status in 1992 of these venues and the lack of any knowledge or confirmation of such an equipment removal may explain the (possibly erroneous) inclusion. IMAX and other large format special venue installations have not been cited except in cases where it is known that any such venues were equipped for 5/70 presentations in addition to 15/70 presentations. In the case of venues that during the 1992 calendar year incurred an ownership change or renovation resulting in additional auditoria, effort has been made to cite such details based upon the venue’s status at the end of the year.
