 The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
engagements of “Lafayette” in North America. These were the cinemas worth
seeking out to experience the best presentation of this motion picture. The Copernic-Cosmos/Maco release was directed by Jean Dréville and starred Jack Hawkins, Orson Welles, Howard St. John, Edmund Purdom, Vittorio De Sica, Pascale Audret and Michel LeRoyer. The North American premiere of “Lafayette” took place April 10th, 1963, at the DeMille in New York. (The film’s world premiere was held at the Paris Opera over a year earlier in Paris on February 8th, 1962. The film was previewed February 1st, 1962, aboard the luxury liner SS France while docked at Le Havre, France.) Out of the hundreds of first-run films released in North America during 1963, “Lafayette” was among only five released with 70mm prints (four, including “Lafayette,” from large format or large aperture origination plus one blow-up). The 70mm prints of “Lafayette” featured six-track stereophonic sound and full-frame imagery sourced from Technirama Large Aperture.
