 The
following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
presentations of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” in North America. “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” was among ten films (and at least four re-issues) released in 1979 with 70mm* prints for selected engagements. The Gene Roddenberry production and Paramount release was directed by Robert Wise (“West Side Story,” “The Sound of Music”) and starred William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelly. * Paramount’s original release plans for “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” called for 70mm prints in key markets, but due to the film’s late completion and studio’s unwillingness to delay its release, the 70mm print order was canceled and the film was issued entirely in 35mm upon its opening on December 7th, 1979. At least one 70mm print, however, appears to have been struck at a later date (allegedly for award-consideration screenings) and then placed in the studio’s repertory bookings inventory. The film’s 70mm prints featured Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“A” encoded “baby boom” format) and full-frame imagery blown up from anamorphic 35mm. |
