The
following is a reference / historical listing of the roadshow and 70mm
presentations of Patton in the United States and Canada.
The Twentieth Century-Fox release, produced in Dimension 150, was directed
by Franklin J. Schaffner (Planet of the Apes, Nicholas and Alexandria)
and starred George C. Scott as General George S. Patton and Karl Malden as
General Omar N. Bradley. The films world premiere was held February 4th,
1970, at the Criterion in New York.
The presentations cited in the main section of this work were hard ticket
roadshow engagements (i.e. special, long-running, showcase presentations in
major cities prior to the film being exhibited as a general release). Much
like a stage production, these typically featured an average of only ten
scheduled screenings per week, advanced admission pricing, reserved seating,
and an overture/intermission/entracte/exit music. (Unlike most roadshows,
Patton lacked an overture and exit music and instead featured a prologue.)
A souvenir program booklet and soundtrack album were sold, as well, and, in
some roadshow venues.
The print types utilized during the films release were, depending on the
booking, (1) 70-millimeter (2.20:1 from Dimension 150 origination) with
discrete magnetic six-channel stereophonic sound, (2) 35-millimeter
anamorphic reduction with discrete magnetic four-channel stereophonic sound
and optical monaural sound, (3) 35-millimeter anamorphic reduction with
optical monaural sound.
Out of the hundreds of films released in North America during 1970, Patton
was among only five given deluxe roadshow treatment and among only ten
released with 70mm prints (four, including Patton, from 65mm origination,
plus six blow-ups).
Alternative English-language titles for Patton include Patton: Lust for
Glory, Patton: A Salute to a General, and Patton: A Salute to a Rebel.
Patton was the second of two features shot in Dimension 150 aka D-150.
(The first was The Bible [1966].) Interestingly, unlike with The Bible,
Fox booked Patton during its initial North American reserved-seat bookings
in a grand total of zero D-150-branded cinemas.
