Once again over the past few months there has not been much in the way of 70mm presentations in London.
"Lawrence of Arabia" returned for a short season at the Curzon Mayfair, this was followed by a return season of
"2001: A Space Odyssey".
Shaftsbury Avenue opened its doors again on August 30th with a Gala screening of
"What's Cooking?". It is now a 4 screen cinema and has been renamed Odeon Covent Garden. It still has the ability to show 70mm.
It also looks as if the Odeon Haymarket will never open again as a cinema. It suffered a lot of flood damage during the rebuilding of the office block which sits on top of the cinema. This is a shame as this was really a nice single screen cinema, and in its heyday was a little gold mine, playing many exclusive presentations for a long while. It opened with
"Barabbas" in 70mm with massive publicity, but has slipped away unnoticed by many.
