I
am delighted to report that "A Tale of Old Whiff", the animated,
two-reel cartoon (Running time 16-17 minutes) by John Hubley that originally accompanied the
"Scent of Mystery"
feature in its' 1960 theatrical release, and one which was officially
"lost", when he and David
Strohmaier were desperately looking for it to accompany their DVD/Blu-Ray
re-mastered release
of that feature, has been found.
Andrew Bradburn, Film Archivist at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences, reported on June 30 that the cartoon had been found and is intact.
The cartoon is otherwise faded and has magnetic sound. The important
milestones of this short are significant. It was the first (and only)
cartoon in Smell-O-Vision, the piped-in theatrical scent process that was
launched with the
Mike
Todd, Jr.-produced
opus "Scent of Mystery". More importantly, it was the first animated
one-cartoon in 70mm."
