Written and compiled by: Michael Coate Date: May 29, 2004
1977 re-release advert. in70mm.com collection

Listed below are the known original 1968/69 reserved seat engagements of “2001: A Space Odyssey”.  Each was (or believed to have been) a 70mm six-track stereophonic sound presentation, with most having been promoted as a “Cinerama” presentation.  Because of the exclusive “one engagement per region” distribution approach used at the time, the majority of engagements are identified by market or metropolitan area, rather than the specific city in which the cinemas may have been located.  (For instance, the Kachina was in the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale; the Cooper for Minneapolis was in nearby St. Louis Park; etc.).  A handful of the engagements were not promoted as reserved seat engagements but are included here because (1) they were a 70mm presentation, and (2) were in release during the initial reserved seat period and before the 35mm general release.

A few moveovers are included in the list where the “new” engagement continued to be that market’s exclusive engagement.  The engagement duration has been included for selected entries to illustrate how successful the release was (and to show just how much times have changed).  Not included here are 70mm return engagements, re-releases, “MGM Fabulous Four” packages, special screenings, or any 35mm general release engagements. (Please do not write in with claims of: “I remember seeing ‘2001’ at a midnight screening at the such-and-such Theatre while in college in the mid-1970s” or “Don’t forget they re-released it right after "Star Wars" came out” or “There was a 1982 engagement of "2001" in 70mm in my hometown of Austin, Texas that’s missing from your list”.  Do write if you believe any information is incorrect or if you have details for any original engagements not represented on the list.  Please keep in mind that no one is immune to faulty memory, so be prepared to provide distributor or exhibitor booking details, or a dated newspaper advertisement photocopy to support your claim.)

What follows is the (work-in-progress) list of original 70mm “2001: A Space Odyssey” engagements arranged in chronological order.  For those readers who remember seeing “2001” during this time, as with the film, enjoy the trip!

The Original Reserved-Seat Roadshow Engagements Of "2001: A Space Odyssey"

This list is a work-in-progress, and the known engagements are arranged chronologically by date of premiere. For selected entries, the duration of the engagement, measured in weeks, has been provided. Duration data marked with ">" indicates the engagement was relocated to another cinema and continued on an exclusive reserved-seat basis. The duration provided for the continuation/moveover run includes that run's duration plus the cumulative duration for both engagements. A select few of the engagements were not reserved-seat engagements but are included because they were a 70mm presentation.

The prints booked into Cinerama theatres included an "In Cinerama" title card during the film's end credit sequence. (The DVD versions of the film include this credit.) The 70mm prints that were booked into non-Cinerama venues had the "In Cinerama" credit replaced with a spliced-in "In 70mm" credit.

“Stanley Kubrick made the ultimate science fiction movie, and it is going to be very hard for someone to come along and make a better movie, as far as I’m concerned. On a technical level, it can be compared, but personally I think that ‘2001’ is far superior.”

“Star Wars” director George Lucas, 1977
