Todd-AO 65mm Camera AP-65, #1

I think there was a total of six AP-65 made with pelical mirror reflex systems. Five were able to operate up to 32fps and one up to 72fps. Over the years these cameras were sold off for one reason or another and several were modified by Doug Fries over the years. My interest in owning the one in the picture of me was that it was the original design and was serial number one.

The basic features of the camera that make it unique in its field include:

• Extreme mobility by weight and balance
• Ease of operation control
• Remarkable capability for quality
• Sophistication and flexibility
• Adaptability with instant adjustments
• Continuous "through the lens" viewing and focusing
• Realistic film capacities that permit use of 1000 foot magazines when necessary
• Changeable motor speeds and trouble free mechanisms
• Several "firsts" in controls and adjustments

These many qualifications and technical advancements make the Todd-AO hand-held 65mm camera a truly remarkable asset for the production of 65mm films.

Design is the secret. The camera itself is so constructed of the newest lightest materials - it weighs only 24 pounds including film and motor - (25% lighter than any other hand-held camera).

Because of detailing and perfect counter balancing, the camera rests fully and comfortably on the shoulder. The design and location of the eye viewer permits the cameraman to operate with complete freedom. The "on" and "off" controls beign locate don the hand grip.

The shoulder support and hand grip can easily be detached in seconds when the camera is to be used on a tripod or boom.

The fantastic mobility of this new 65mm camera opens up whole new dimensions of production possibilities. The contribution that this new TODD-AO Camera can make for better motion pictures will be evident on the dramatic results that will be recorded on film - footage that would not even be planned for filming with conventional equipment.
