Brazilian 70mm film pioneer Orion Jardim de Faria passed away on December 25th 2012. One would have anticipated his passing due to a severe heart condition he endured for many years.

Notwithstanding, he was living an active, still film-dedicated personal life. A movie lover himself, his profound knowledge of every aspect of film making and exhibition made his acquaintance with new technology far easier.

I last met him in a small resort in São Paulo where he decided to retire from the constantly busy and polluted city centre of that state. He had built a home theatre using some of his former brand components, such as Dolby decoders and the like. Orion survived a son that worked for Dolby Labs in the US, so he knew the basis of that technology for theatrical alignment purposes.

I met Orion de Faria and had the honour to be granted an interview with him on May 2010, part of which was published on both in70mm and Webinsider sites.

Sadly, we both lived miles apart, so it was difficult to see each other personally. To me and perhaps to the film community of this country his departure is a significant loss, and I sincerely hope that his memory will endure so that newer generations may be aware of his contributions and devotion to the industry in this country.
