Michael Todd in Copenhagen, March 2014. Image by Thomas Hauerslev
I am very sorry to report the passing of Oliver Todd. Oliver passed
away just before midnight Tuesday 23. February
2016 following complications of his cancer treatment. Oliver died in
hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark, with his sister Eliza and brother Del present.
His body has been cremated and his ashes will be scattered in the field
in front of the house, in Ireland following his own wish.
I was happy to have met Oliver not so long ago - such a pleasant person,
full of spirit, humour and wit. He was very happy to talk about the history
when I interviewed him at the
former Todd-AO cinema in Copenhagen.
Modest as he were, he repeated several times, that he did not know much
about the 70mm story, but I assured him, that did not matter.
Oliver was our
guest of honour in
Aalborg in 2014, and he had a ball seeing 70mm.
Oliver admitted that "West Side Story", a film he had
previously disliked, was now something he had come to admire, when seen
in 7OMM - a motion picture presentation system conceived by his
grand dad. Oliver was probably a bit surprised to meet the
enthusiastic 7OMM fans. Everyone wanted his autograph and talk to him,
and I like to think he enjoyed it. Many of us have enjoyed the story of 70mm for many
years, and it was a thrill, and pleasure, to share this day with a member of
the Todd family among us.
We rode back together on the train to Copenhagen. The last time I saw him
was last year in January 2015 when I gave him a copy of the
“Scent of Mystery”
BluRay. I am sorry I did not meet him again. What a great person! He will be
missed.
