Gartenbau Kino in Vienna, with its lavishly designed cinema hall and one of the largest projection screens in town, has awaked from a long, deep 70mm slumber period (1994 – 2016), during which no single 70 mm presentation took place in Vienna. Until the time around 1974 the town of „Wien“ offered 70 mm shows in several cinemas: Forum, Kosmos, Tabor, Apollo, and during the sixties and seventies Gartenbau-Kino used to be one of the leading premiere cinemas of Vienna.

Unfortunately from 1994 onwards, 70mm presentations were banished in whole Vienna, because they were too costly and too complex. The success of the Ultra-Panavision 70 presentation of „The Hateful Eight“ in December 2015 until February 2016 was the catalyst for a new era in Vienna cinema history – thanks to the experts from Karlsruhe who have helped our Viennese cinema carriers to install the necessary 70mm technical equipment for light and sound!

The new conditions resulted in 2 spectacular 70mm programmes of classic epic movies : „Spartacus“ on 09.10.2016 in Super Technirama 70 (Restored version from 1991 to be introducted by film historian Mr. Jean-Pierre Gutzeit) and „2OO1: A Space Odyssey“ in Super Panavision 70 on 14.10.2016! Other 70mm titles will follow soon – let's hope so!
