This
film still holds the UK record for a Cinema run if you are interested -
Opened 21st April 1958 - The
Dominion
Cinema Tottenham Court Road London, presented in Todd-AO 70mm 6 Track
Magnetic Sound. Final performance - 30th September 1962 - Total run 4 Years
5 months 2 Weeks !! a total of 232 Weeks. They only had two 70mm prints in
that time the number of screenings at this Cinema 2,551 performances!! in
London an unbroken, record run that will probably never be equalled!! The
Director of the film Joshua Logan was quoted as saying that the films run at
this Cinema alone had covered the films entire production costs
unbelievable.
The print on Blu Ray is amazing this is
Todd-AO photography at its best shot by 20th Century Fox's ace cameraman
Leon Shamroy gorgeous print no Digital here all shot on celluloid film and
the soundtrack and orchestrations Alfred Newman and the Fox Orchestra
belting the score out amazing!! Two versions as well on 2 discs the
157-minute "general release" cut of the film. Disc two features the
long-thought-lost "Road Show" version of
"South Pacific", a cut that
increases the film's length by 14 minutes. The added footage is of
noticeably lesser quality, particularly evidenced by faded colours, thanks
to the limited availability of prints from which to cull the missing scenes.
They just don't make them like this any more they couldn't afford to, the
whole look of the film locations, songs, story pure class. A final note sad
that the only surviving member of the main cast alive is the lovely Miss
Mitzi Gaynor who will be 86 years young on Sept 4th 2017. Do hope this will
help with your purchase i promise you will not be disappointed just singing
along altogether "Happy Talkie Talkie Happy Talk''
