"The
Alamo" LaserDisc cover.
Bob Bryden sent me an enticing invite to a private screening. I had never been to a private screening before and was excited by the prospect. I also got wind that a young man interested in having me produce an album (Ed.:
Chris Byers) would attend. Perfect! A business call, too! I had taken a year-long sabbatical from music production work and needed to schmooze a little these days.
A few interesting things happened this day:
I got the production gig.
I saw “The Alamo”
I saw the last, unedited 70MM print.
But that wasn't all that I saw. ..
I saw passion. Real, unconditional, pure and almost uncontrollable passion. Both on the screen and off. It wasn't so much that film that affected me (although I enjoyed it immensely and now own a VHS copy) , but it was the zeal of a small audience, who travelled great distances to greet the day with such enthusiasm, that really inspired me personally.
It seemed a new dawn did rise this day. ..
I became far more involved after my re-introduction to the recording studios (three album projects and two more starting up before Christmas '91, and re-lit my creative and artistic fires once more. I also had my interest in the movies dramatically re-awakened. I had studied film ten years prior (including shooting little 8MM and 16MM shorts) but had put my education and interest in film into a safety deposit box.
It was time for a good, healthy withdrawal. ..
