The
following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
presentations of “The Last Valley” in North America. The film’s 70mm prints
consisted of full-frame imagery derived from 65mm Todd-AO photography and
featured discrete six-channel stereophonic sound.
“The Last Valley” was among four confirmed first-run films released in 1971
with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The ABC/Cinerama release was
directed by James Clavell and starred Michael Caine and Omar Sharif. These
were continuous performance, general release bookings (i.e. not roadshow…although
roadshow style program booklets were made available).
The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) has for some entries
been included in parenthesis following the cinema name.
1971-01-28 … New York, NY — Rivoli (6)
1971-02-03 … Los Angeles, CA — Egyptian (8)
This information has been principally referenced from film industry trade
publications and regional newspaper promotion, with thanks to Mark
Lensenmayer.
Additional 70mm prints were screened internationally but have not been
accounted for in this article.
