Written by: Showmen’s Trade Review, October 15, 1955 Date: 01.07.2008
When, in the Fall of 1953, Philips of the Netherlands, entered into an agreement with American Optical Company to collaborate on the design of a projector for the TODD-AO; process that would be compatible with other existing systems, the company which is officially known as the N. V. Philips Gloeilampenfabrieken, located in Eindhoven, Holland, was not entering a field that was new to its engineering and manufacturing staffs. For Philips has been importantly engaged in designing and manufacturing professional 35mm and 16mm projectors and auxiliary equipment since 1934.

Although many problems had to be solved in the engineering of the revolutionary 70/35 mm projector, the Philips' Research Laboratory consisting of hundreds of scientists, assistants and technicians, in collaboration with scientists of American Optical, resulted in the completion of three finished projectors by the spring of 1954. These were delivered to the American Optical Company in Massachusetts and the development of the new process for making motion pictures and presenting them in existing theatres entered its final phase.
