| | “The Dark Crystal”: The 70mm Engagements “Another world, another time… in the age of wonder.” | Read more at in70mm.com The 70mm Newsletter
| Compiled by: Michael Coate | Date: 09.06.2017 | The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter engagements of “The Dark Crystal” in the United States and Canada. These were the cinemas worth seeking out to experience this motion picture.
“The Dark Crystal” was among eighteen confirmed first-run films released in 1982 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The ITC Entertainment production and Associated Film/Universal release — directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz — opened December 17th.
Pre-release screenings included the film’s world premiere held December 13th at the Astor Plaza in New York and the west coast premiere held December 14th at the Samuel Goldwyn in Beverly Hills.
The film’s 70mm prints featured Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“A” encoded Baby Boom format) and full-frame imagery blown up from anamorphic 35mm.
Universal circulated 70mm Six-Track Dolby coming-attraction trailers for “Bad Boys,” “Doctor Detroit,” “Jaws 3-D” and “The Pirates of Penzance” during the release of “The Dark Crystal.” Other studios circulated 70mm trailers during this period, as well. Ultimately, any 70mm trailers screened during 70mm presentations of “The Dark Crystal” varied by venue and screening.
The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) has been included in parenthesis following the applicable cinema name.
CALIFORNIA Costa Mesa — Edwards’ Town Center 4 (9) Los Angeles — Pacific’s Hollywood Pacific Triplex (8) Los Angeles — Pacific’s Picwood (7) Sacramento — Syufy’s Capitol Twin (12) San Francisco — Blumenfeld’s Regency I (6) San Jose — Syufy’s Century 22 Triplex (14)
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA Washington — Circle’s MacArthur Triplex (8)
GEORGIA Atlanta — Columbia (5)
HAWAII Honolulu — Consolidated’s Cinerama (8)
ILLINOIS Hillside — M&R’s Hillside Square 4 (7) Norridge — M&R’s Norridge 4 (6) Schaumburg — Plitt’s Woodfield 4 (7)
MICHIGAN Southfield — NGT’s Americana 4 (7)
NEW YORK New York — Loews’ Astor Plaza (8)
ONTARIO Ottawa — Odeon’s Somerset (6) Toronto — Odeon’s Varsity Twin (6)
PENNSYLVANIA Philadelphia — Budco’s Regency Twin (6)
TEXAS Dallas — Loews’ Park Central 4 (8)
Note that some of the presentations included in this listing may have been presented in 35mm during the latter week(s) of engagement due to contractual terms or print damage and the distributor’s unwillingness to supply a 70mm replacement print or because the booking was moved to a non-70mm-equipped auditorium within a multiplex. As well, the reverse may have been true in some cases whereas a booking began with a 35mm print because the lab was unable to complete the 70mm print order in time for an opening-day delivery or the exhibitor negotiated a mid-run switch to 70mm. In these cases, any 35mm portion of the engagement has been included in the duration figure.
