The
following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
presentations of “The Deer Hunter” in North America. These were the cinemas
worth seeking out to experience this film.
“The Deer Hunter” was among eight confirmed first-run films released in 1978
and among nine in 1979 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The EMI
production/Universal release was directed by Michael Cimino and starred
Robert DeNiro, John Cazale, John Savage, Meryl Streep and Christopher Walken.
The 70mm prints of “The Deer Hunter” featured Six-Track Dolby Stereo
(“A”-encoded, Format 41) and letterboxed imagery (approximately 2.39:1)
blown up from anamorphic 35mm.
The first-run 70mm engagements cited in this work were exhibited on a
reserved-performance “modified roadshow” policy.
