The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
presentations of “Grease 2” in North America. These were the cinemas worth
seeking out to experience this motion picture.
“Grease 2” was among eighteen confirmed first-run films released in 1982
with 70mm prints for selected engagements. Eight 70mm prints of the film
were reportedly struck for distribution in North America, less than one
percent of the film’s total print run. The Robert Stigwood-Allan Carr
production and Paramount release — directed by Patricia Birch and starring
Maxwell Caulfield, Michelle Pfeiffer and Adrian Zmed — opened June 11th.
Pre-release screenings included the film’s world premiere held June 3rd at
the Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles, an invitational preview June 8th at the
Samuel Goldwyn in Beverly Hills, and the east coast premiere June 9th at the
Ziegfeld in New York.
The 70mm prints of “Grease 2” featured Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“A” encoded
“baby boom” format) and full-frame imagery blown up from anamorphic 35mm.
Paramount circulated 70mm Six-Track Dolby coming-attraction trailers for
“Airplane II: The Sequel” and “An Officer and a Gentleman” during the
release of “Grease 2.” Other studios circulated 70mm trailers during this
period, as well. Ultimately, any 70mm trailers screened during 70mm
presentations of “Grease 2” varied by venue and screening.
The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) has been included in
parenthesis following the cinema name.
