The
following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
engagements of “The Jazz Singer” in the United States and Canada. These were
the cinemas worth seeking out to experience the best presentation of this
motion picture.
“The Jazz Singer” was among eleven confirmed first-run films released in
1980 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The Associated Film
Distribution (AFD) release — directed by Richard Fleischer (“Barabbas,”
“Doctor Dolittle,” “Tora! Tora! Tora!,” “Crossed Swords”) and starring Neil
Diamond and Laurence Olivier — opened December 19th.
Pre-release screenings included a sneak preview held November 7th at Edwards
Newport in Newport Beach and the world premiere held December 17th at
Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
The 70mm prints of “The Jazz Singer” featured Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“A”
encoded Baby Boom format with a Split Surround playback option) and
pillarboxed imagery (approximately 1.85:1) blown up from spherical 35mm.
AFD circulated 70mm Six-Track Dolby coming-attraction trailers for “The
Great Muppet Caper,” “Hard Country” and “The Legend of the Lone Ranger”
during the release of “The Jazz Singer.” Other studios circulated 70mm
trailers during this period, as well. Ultimately, any 70mm trailers screened
during 70mm presentations of “The Jazz Singer” varied by venue and
screening.
The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) has been included for
some entries in parenthesis following the cinema name.
