The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter engagements of “The Muppet Movie” in North America. These were arguably the best cinemas in which to experience this motion picture.

“The Muppet Movie” was among nine confirmed first-run films released in 1979 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The ITC production and AFD release — directed by James Frawley and featuring the talents of Muppet performers Jim Henson, Franz Oz, Jerry Nelson, Richard Hunt and Dave Goelz, along with a spectacular lineup of guest stars — opened June 22nd.

Pre-release screenings of “The Muppet Movie” included the North American premiere held June 21st at the Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles. (The film’s world premiere was held May 31st at Leicester Square in London.)

The 70mm prints of “The Muppet Movie” featured pillarboxed imagery (approximately 1.85:1) blown up from spherical 35mm and Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“A” encoded “baby boom” format).

AFD circulated a 70mm trailer for “Love and Bullets” during the release of “The Muppet Movie.” Other studios circulated 70mm trailers, as well, during this period. The 70mm trailers, if any, ultimately seen during 70mm presentations of “The Muppet Movie” varied by venue and screening.

The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) has been included in parenthesis following the cinema name.
