 The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter engagements of “Titanic” in the United States and Canada. These were the cinemas worth seeking out to experience this motion picture.“Titanic” was the only first-run film released in 1997 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The Lightstorm Entertainment production and Paramount/20th Century Fox release — directed by James Cameron (“Aliens,” “Terminator 2”) and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet — opened December 19th. Pre-release screenings included 70mm presentations at some venues during advance media screenings, benefit premieres, invitational previews, etc., including at some locales that ultimately did not screen a 70mm print during the commercial release. The 70mm prints of “Titanic” featured DTS audio and 2.20:1 full-frame imagery blown up from Super-35. For the release of “Titanic,” Paramount & Fox employed the services of Lucasfilm’s Theatre Alignment Program (TAP) to evaluate and approve the cinemas selected to book a 70mm print. Paramount circulated 70mm-DTS coming-attraction trailers for “Deep Impact,” “Hard Rain,” “The Odd Couple II” and “The Truman Show” during the 70mm release of “Titanic.” The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) is included in parenthesis following the cinema name. As well, the reverse may have been true in some cases whereas a booking began with a 35mm print because the lab was unable to complete the 70mm print order in time for an opening-day delivery or the exhibitor negotiated a mid-run switch to 70mm.
