“The Odyssey”: Los Angeles 70mm Print Count

Sir Christopher's "The Odyssey" is now out and here is the lowdown on the large-format situation. Here in Los Angeles (i.e. Southern California) we have eighteen 70mm prints (five in IMAX 70mm aka "15/70" and thirteen in regular 70mm aka "5/70"), the most of anywhere in the world (plus another 5/70 in San Diego at AMC Mission Valley if you want to consider that a part of greater Los Angeles).

The worldwide 70mm total for THE ODYSSEY is:

• 186 (41 in 15/70 [25 of those in the United States]
• and 145 in 5/70 [USA = 95]).

This is the most large-format prints struck for a single title since the days of “Far and Away”, “Dick Tracy”, “2010”, and the “Star Wars” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” sequels.

Los Angeles County has never had this many day-and-date 70mm prints of a movie (though this is due in part to the shrinking of the booking zones and lack of exclusivity). In the roadshow days there was typically ONE print for an entire region that would play what seemed like forever. In the glory days when 70mm prints were plentiful (the Dolby era) the bookings were spread throughout LA County AND the surrounding counties, especially Orange.
