The 70mm Association Newsletter (London Branch) |
Issue 51 - December 1997 |
Since the previous newsletter not much has happened on the scene in London.
The National Film Theatre had screenings of "Streets of Fire" and the old favorite
"Lawrence of Arabia" in 70mm and The Prince Charles (cinema) have
shown "Hamlet".
On Tuesday November 18th, 1997 the Royal Film Performance took place at the
Empire Leicester Square. The selected film was "Titanic" which was presented
in 70mm with DTS sound. The film itself does not open to the public here
until January at the Odeon
Leicester Square. As yet, we do not know if this
will be presented in 70mm - watch this space.
Virgin Cinemas are currently modernizing all of their sites in the UK. They
are at present doing the screens at Fulham Road and Haymarket. When they
re-open they will not have facilities for showing 70mm. London's first IMAX
Theatre is due to open in the Trocadero centre in December with the world
premiere of "The Nutcracker" in IMAX. The BFI has plans for another IMAX as
part of their complex on the South Bank. As yet, no dates have been
announced.
