The
Oscar is on display, together with DP70 1656. Opening, March 1 2018, of the
retrospective exhibition "And the Oscar goes to... Philips" in the
Philips Museum in Eindhoven.
In 1963, precies 55 jaar geleden, viel Philips een bijzondere eer te beurt. The
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences verleende een gouden ‘technische
Oscar’ aan Philips voor de ontwikkeling van een innovatieve breedbeeld
filmprojector, de DP70. Ter gelegenheid van de 90ste Oscaruitreiking zijn de
DP70 én de gouden Academy Award vanaf 2 maart 2018 voor het eerst voor publiek
te zien in het Philips Museum.
Filmproducer Michael Todd, de echtgenoot van filmactrice Elizabeth Taylor, vroeg
Philips in 1954 een filmprojector te ontwikkelen voor zijn
Todd-AO breedbeeldfilm.
Jan Kotte, hoofdconstructeur
van de
Philips
Cinemagroep, ging
met zijn team aan de slag en ontwikkelde de DP70. Deze filmprojector was
geschikt voor zowel de normale 35mm als de 70mm breedbeeld films. “De
projector werd legendarisch vanwege de ingenieuze constructie, het
bedieningsgemak en de beeldkwaliteit”, zegt conservator Sergio Derks. “De
projector bleef decennialang in gebruik bij bioscopen overal ter wereld. Vanwege
het grote succes kreeg de DP70 al snel de bijnaam ‘Dollar Prinses’. De Oscar
vormde de bekroning op het werk.”

Opening,
March 1 2018, of the retrospective exhibition "And the Oscar goes to...
Philips" in the Philips Museum in Eindhoven.
Bij de Oscar-uitreiking van 1963 waren 2.500 gasten aanwezig, onder wie
filmsterren als Sophia Loren, Gregory Peck en Audrey Hepburn. Ook drie
medewerkers van Philips waren present om de onderscheiding in ontvangst te
nemen. Gastheer van de avond was Frank Sinatra. Het Philips Museum toont foto’s
daarvan en vertelt het verhaal achter deze bijzondere prestatie. Ook de gouden
Technical and Scientifical Academy Award is aanwezig. Sergio Derks: “Het is
de eerste keer dat deze Oscar wordt getoond aan het grote publiek. Dus wie dit
bijzondere beeldje wil zien, is van harte welkom in het Philips Museum.”
De expositie "And the Oscar goes to…Philips" is te zien van 2 maart tot en met 13
mei. Entree met toegangskaart. Voor Museumkaarthouders is entree gratis.
