“The Sound of Music”: The Roadshow and 70mm Engagements

Compiled by: Michael CoateDate: 08.07.2024
The following is a reference / historical listing of the roadshow and 70mm presentations of “The Sound of Music” in the United States and Canada (plus one section on international exhibition).

The presentations cited in the main section of this work were “hard ticket” roadshow engagements (i.e. special, long-running, showcase presentations in major cities prior to the film being exhibited as a general release). Much like a stage production, these typically featured an average of only ten scheduled screenings per week, advanced admission pricing, reserved seating, and an overture/intermission/entr’acte/exit music. (Unlike most roadshows during this era, “The Sound of Music” lacked an overture, entr’acte and exit music but did include an intermission.) A souvenir program booklet and soundtrack album were sold, as well, and, in some roadshow venues.

The print types utilized during the film’s roadshow release were, depending on the booking, (1) 70-millimeter (2.20:1 from Todd-AO) with discrete magnetic six-channel stereophonic sound, (2) 35-millimeter reduction with discrete magnetic four-channel stereophonic sound and optical monaural sound, (3) 35-millimeter reduction with optical monaural sound.

The Twentieth Century-Fox release, produced in Todd-AO, was directed by Robert Wise (“West Side Story,” “STAR!””) and starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The film, based upon the real-life adventures of the singing von Trapp family as well as the German films “Die Trapp Familie” (1956) and “Die Trapp Familie in Amerika (1958) and the 1959 Rodgers & Hammerstein stage production, was a huge success, becoming the first film to eclipse the box-office performance of “Gone With the Wind” which had held the all-time record for nearly three decades.

The film’s world premiere was held March 2nd, 1965, at the Rivoli in New York.

Out of the hundreds of films released in North America during 1965, “The Sound of Music” was among only ten given deluxe roadshow treatment and among only eleven released with 70mm prints (eight, including “The Sound of Music,” from 65mm origination, plus three blow-ups).

“‘The Sound of Music’ is a movie phenomenon that is only truly equaled by ‘Gone With the Wind’ and the original ‘Star Wars,’” says Mike Matessino, producer/director of ‘The Sound of Music: From Fact to Phenomenon’ documentary and producer/engineer of ‘The Sound of Music: Super Deluxe Edition’ soundtrack release. “It cemented the Rodgers and Hammerstein legacy and 20th Century Fox wouldn’t exist today if it were not for that movie. But, more importantly, it is a movie that reached and touched people on a very deep level and is truly timeless.”

“There are very few works that have endured so completely, well beyond the era in which they debuted, as ‘The Sound of Music’ has,” says Barry Monush, author of ‘The Sound of Music FAQ: All That’s Left to Know about Maria, the von Trapps, and Our Favorite Things.’ “It is an instantly recognizable touchstone for not only those of us who first experienced it in the 1960s, but for subsequent generations, and that sort of impact cannot be underestimated.”

Beginning late 1966, and continuing through 1967 and 1968, Fox transitioned “The Sound of Music” into a general release, first with a quasi-roadshow “Special Selective Engagement” and followed by several waves of second-run, return runs, neighborhood runs, drive-ins bookings, etc., and, finally, farewell bookings during 1969. None of these thousands of mostly-35mm presentations during this phase of the film’s release have been cited in this work.
