The
following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
engagements of “Black Tights” in the United States and Canada. These were
the cinemas worth seeking out to experience this motion picture.
“Black Tights” (aka “Un deux trois quatre!” and “Les collants noirs”) was
among four confirmed first-run films released in 1962 with 70mm prints for
selected engagements.
The Magna release was directed by Terence Young (“Thunderball,” “Mayerling”)
and starred Cyd Charisse, Moira Shearer, Zizi Jeanmaire, Roland Petit and
introduced by Maurice Chevalier and was a four-part anthology of ballets
based upon “La Croqueuse de diamants,” “Cyrano de Bergerac,” “Deuil en 24
heures” and “Carmen.”
The 70mm prints of “Black Tights” featured discrete six-track stereophonic
sound and full-frame imagery sourced from Technirama Large Aperture
(promoted as “Super Technirama 70”). The film was exhibited with a
reserved-seat “roadshow” policy (one of nine such releases in ’62).
