“For the Boys”: The North American 70mm Engagements
“Laughter and tears. Tragedy and triumph. They lived it all. For the boys.”

The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter engagements of “For the Boys” in the United States and Canada. These were the cinemas worth seeking out to experience this motion picture.

“For the Boys” was among ten confirmed first-run films released in 1991 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The 20th Century Fox release — directed by Mark Rydell (“The Cowboys,” “The Rose”) and starring Bette Midler and James Caan — opened in limited release November 22nd.

For the release of “For the Boys,” Fox employed the services of Lucasfilm’s Theatre Alignment Program (TAP) to evaluate and approve the cinemas selected to book a 70mm print.

Pre-release screenings included an invitational preview held November 14th at the Samuel Goldwyn in Beverly Hills. The film was also screened at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival during November 1991 (precise date and presentation format undetermined).

The 70mm prints of “For the Boys” featured pillarboxed imagery (approximately 1.85:1) blown up from spherical 35mm and a dual inventory of Cinema Digital Sound* (CDS) and Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“A”-encoded Baby Boom format).

*The end credits of “For the Boys” and some of its promotional material carry a Cinema Digital Sound (CDS) logo, suggesting the film was released in that format. No CDS screenings, however, could be verified. (Digital sound accelerated an industry trend of fewer titles released with 70mm prints and a generally-smaller 70mm print run on those titles selected to be printed in 70mm.)

Fox circulated 70mm Six-Track Dolby coming-attraction trailers for “Alien 3,” “Back in the USSR,” “Grand Canyon,” “My Cousin Vinny,” “Naked Lunch,” “Shining Through,” “This Is My Life” and “White Men Can’t Jump” during the release of “For the Boys.” Other studios circulated 70mm trailers during this period, as well. Ultimately, any 70mm trailers screened during 70mm presentations of “For the Boys” varied by venue and screening.

The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) is included in parenthesis following the cinema name.

1991-11-22 … Los Angeles — GCC’s Avco Center Triplex (7) [THX]
1991-11-22 … New York — Cineplex Odeon’s Ziegfeld (5)

1991-11-27 … Chicago — Cineplex Odeon’s McClurg Court Triplex (2) [THX]
1991-11-27 … Denver — UA’s Cooper Twin (1+)
1991-11-27 … San Francisco — Blumenfeld’s Alhambra (6)
1991-11-27 … Washington — Cineplex Odeon’s Uptown (3)

1991-11-29 … Toronto — Cineplex Odeon’s Hyland Twin (6)

Note that some of the presentations included in this listing may have been presented in 35mm during the latter week(s) of engagement due to contractual terms or print damage and the distributor’s unwillingness to supply a 70mm replacement print or because the booking was moved to a non-70mm-equipped auditorium within a multiplex. As well, the reverse may have been true in some cases whereas a booking began with a 35mm print because the lab was unable to complete the 70mm print order in time for an opening-day delivery or the exhibitor negotiated a mid-run switch to 70mm. In these cases, any 35mm portion of the engagement (or movement out of a branded auditorium) has been included in the duration figure.

SUBSEQUENT 70MM ENGAGEMENTS

1991-12-11 … Oak Brook, IL — Cineplex Odeon’s Oakbrook Center 4 (1)
1991-12-25 … New York, NY — Cineplex Odeon’s National Twin (2)

The information included in this article was principally referenced from film industry trade publications, regional newspaper promotion, print enclosures, TAP records, and Dolby records. Special thanks to David Ayers, Bill Kallay, Bill Kretzel and Cliff Stephenson.

International 70mm engagements of this title have not been accounted for in this article.
