listing of the 70-millimeter engagements of “The Great Waltz” in the United
States and Canada. These were the cinemas worth seeking out to experience
the best presentation of this motion picture.
The MGM release was directed by Andrew L. Stone (”Song of Norway”) and
starred Horst Bucholz and Mary Costa. The film’s world premiere was held
October 31st, 1972, at the Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
Out of the hundreds of films released during 1972, “The Great Waltz” was
among only six released with 70mm prints.
The 70mm prints of “The Great Waltz” featured six-track magnetic audio and
full-frame imagery blown up from anamorphic 35mm.
