The
following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
engagements of “Howards End” in the United States and Canada. These were the
cinemas worth seeking out to experience this motion picture.
“Howards End” was among ten confirmed first-run films released in 1992 with
70mm prints for selected engagements. The Merchant Ivory production and Sony
Pictures Classics release — directed by James Ivory (“A Room with a View,”
“The Remains of the Day”) and starring Anthony Hopkins, Vanessa Redgrave,
Helena Bonham Carter and Emma Thompson — opened March 13th in limited
release. (The film’s world premiere was held February 27th at the Lincoln
Center’s Alice Tully Hall in New York.)
For the release of “Howards End,” Sony Pictures Classics employed the
services of Lucasfilm’s Theatre Alignment Program (TAP) to evaluate and
approve the cinemas selected to book a 70mm print.
The 70mm prints of “Howards End” featured Six-Track Dolby Stereo
(“A”-encoded Baby Boom format) and full-frame imagery blown up from
Super-35.
