The following is a reference / historical
listing of the 70-millimeter presentations of Disney’s “The Hunchback of
Notre Dame” in North America. “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” was among two Disney one-off 70mm premieres during 1996 (“101 Dalmatians” at Radio City Music Hall was the other), a Warner Bros. one-off event in Atlanta (“Eraser”), one new 70mm movie release (“Hamlet”) and one 70mm restoration/re-issue (“Vertigo”). The Disney release was directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise (“Beauty and the Beast”) and featured the voice talents of Tom Hulce, Demi Moore, Tony Jay, Kevin Kline, Paul Kandel, Jason Alexander, Charles Kimbrough, Mary Wickes and David Ogden Stiers. The 70mm print of “Hunchback” featured pillarboxed imagery (approximately 1.85:1) blown up from spherical 35mm. The audio was interlocked Dolby Digital. The 70mm print was mag-striped as a back-up. Disney included 70mm coming-attraction trailers for “101 Dalmatians,” “Kazaam” and “Phenomenon” with the “Hunchback” premiere presentation.
