“Hurricane”: The North American 70mm Engagements
“There is only one safe place…in each other’s arms.”

The 70mm Newsletter
Compiled by: Michael Coate Date: 20.06.2022
The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter engagements of “Hurricane” in North America. These were the cinemas worth seeking out to experience the best presentation of this motion picture.

“Hurricane” was among nine confirmed first-run films released in 1979 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The DeLaurentiis presentation and Paramount release was directed by Jan Troell (“The Emigrants”) and starred Jason Robards, Mia Farrow, Max Von Sydow, Trevor Howard, Timothy Bottoms and Dayton Ka’ne.

The world premiere of “Hurricane” was held April 12th at the Chinese in Los Angeles. Event doubled as the grand opening of the Chinese’s expansion/renovation from a single-screener to a triplex.

The 70mm prints of “Hurricane” featured Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“A” encoded “baby boom” format) and full-frame imagery blown up from anamorphic 35mm.

Paramount circulated 70mm Six-Track Dolby coming-attraction trailers for “Escape from Alcatraz,” “Prophecy” and “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” during the release of “Hurricane.” Other studios circulated 70mm trailers during this period, as well. Ultimately, any 70mm trailers screened during 70mm presentations of “Hurricane” varied by venue and screening.
