 The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
presentations of Disney’s “The Lion King” in North America. “The Lion King” was among two one-off 70mm premiere events during 1994 (“Miracle on 34th Street” at Radio City Music Hall was the other), two new 70mm movie releases (“Little Buddha” and “True Lies”) and one 70mm restoration/re-issue (“My Fair Lady”). The Buena Vista release was directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff and featured the voice talents of Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons, Moira Kelly, Ernie Sabella, Nathan Lane, Robert Guillaume, Rowan Atkinson, Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin, Jim Cummings and Madge Sinclair. The 70mm print of “The Lion King” featured pillarboxed imagery (approximately 1.85:1) blown up from spherical 35mm. The audio was interlocked Dolby Digital. The 70mm print was mag-striped (Dolby SR encoded) as a back-up. Buena Vista included a 70mm coming-attraction trailer for “Angels in the Outfield” with the premiere presentation of “The Lion King.” The Radio City presentation also included Disney’s Magical Moments stage show.
