| | “Return of the Jedi”: The North American 70mm Engagements | Read more at in70mm.com The 70mm Newsletter
| Compiled by: Michael Coate | Date: 19.03.2024 | The following is a reference / historical listing of the North American 70-millimeter presentations of “Return of the Jedi” (aka “Star Wars: Episode VI—Return of the Jedi”). These were the cinemas worth seeking out to experience this motion picture.
“Return of the Jedi” was among thirteen confirmed first-run films released in 1983 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. An industry record (at the time) of one-hundred sixty-four 70mm prints were struck for distribution in North America and represented about twenty percent of the film’s total initial bookings. The Lucasfilm Ltd. production and 20th Century Fox release — directed by Richard Marquand (“Eye of the Needle,” “Jagged Edge”) and starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher — opened May 25th.
• Go to Remembering "Return of the Jedi"
The 70mm prints of “Return of the Jedi” featured magnetic Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“A” encoded Baby Boom format [Dolby processor setting “42”]) and 2.20:1 full-frame imagery blown up from anamorphic 35mm and provided a superior projection and sound experience in comparison to the film’s 35mm prints.
Note that some cinemas screened a 70mm Six-Track Dolby Stereo print utilizing Dolby-compatible equipment from another manufacturer (EPRAD, Smart, Ultra Stereo, etc.), and in some instances an exhibitor made a special request for a 70mm print that lacked Dolby Noise Reduction so that it could be played on a cinema’s older, pre-Dolby-era sound system.
Lucasfilm’s Theatre Alignment Program (TAP) was launched with the release of “Return of the Jedi.” The program was formed to evaluate and approve the cinemas selected to book a 70mm print and to ensure the highest-quality presentation.
Lucasfilm’s THX Sound System—essentially a set of performance standards—was officially launched with the release of “Return of the Jedi,” with the system installed in three cinemas noted in the bookings list below (and hundreds more installations in the years that followed).
Fox circulated a 70mm Six-Track Dolby coming-attraction trailer for “The Star Chamber” during the release of “Return of the Jedi.” Over the course of the film’s lengthy release, Fox circulated additional 70mm trailers, including “All the Right Moves,” “To Be or Not To Be” and “Two of a Kind.” Other studios circulated 70mm trailers during this period, as well (“Brainstorm,” etc.). Ultimately, any 70mm trailers screened during 70mm presentations of “Jedi” varied by venue and screening.
The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) is included in parenthesis following the cinema name.
PART 1: FIRST RUN
The following are the “Return of the Jedi” first-run 70mm presentations in the United States and Canada. These presentations opened Wednesday, May 25th, 1983, except where noted otherwise. It should be emphasized that some of the cinemas contracted to screen a 70mm print began their engagement with a 35mm back-up print because Deluxe Laboratories was unable to complete the very large and labor-intensive 70mm print order in time for an opening-day delivery; in these handful of cases, the 70mm print arrived over the course of the film’s first week of release and advertising materials were appropriately revised.
Though not accounted for in this work, several of the bookings included a benefit/charity premiere or invitational preview(s) in the days leading up to the public release.
For clarity, some of the geographically confusing or generically-named venues have been stylistically re-named in this work (usually to the name of the shopping center in which the venues in question were located), and the screen-counts cited represent the total number of screens in a complex and not necessarily the specific screen on which the “Jedi” 70mm print was shown.

PART 3: THE 1985 RE-RELEASE
“Return of the Jedi” was re-released in North America on March 29th, 1985, with approximately seventy-five extant 70mm prints included in the print inventory.
During the period of this re-release, circulating 70mm coming-attraction trailers from 20th Century Fox included “Cocoon” and “Moving Violations.” Trailers in 70mm from other studios circulated as well and ultimately any 70mm trailers included in a 70mm presentation of this re-release of “Jedi” varied by venue and screening.
One day prior to this re-release, on March 28th, a one-time-only “Star Wars” 70mm triple feature was held for charity in the following locales: Chicago (Carnegie), Dallas (Northpark), Denver (Continental), Los Angeles (Avco and Egyptian), New York (Warner), San Francisco (Coronet [originally announced for Galaxy]), Seattle (Cinema 150), and Toronto (Uptown). The “Star Wars” 70mm prints screened during this triple feature were newly struck while the “Empire” and “Jedi” prints were extant.

*** 70mm triple feature of “Star Wars,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.”
# Presentation not explicitly or consistently promoted as 70mm, suggesting it may have been 35mm.
Note that some of the presentations included in this listing were presented in 35mm during the latter week(s) of engagement due to contractual terms or because of print damage and the distributor’s unwillingness to supply a 70mm replacement print or because the booking was moved to a smaller, non-70mm-equipped auditorium within a multiplex. As well, the reverse scenario may have been true in some cases whereas a booking began with a 35mm print because the lab was unable to complete the 70mm print order in time for an opening-day delivery or the exhibitor negotiated a mid-run switch to 70mm. In such cases, any 35mm portion of the engagement (or movement out of a branded auditorium) has been included in the duration figure.
The information included in this article was principally referenced from film industry trade publications, regional newspaper promotion, print enclosures, TAP records, Dolby records, etc. Special thanks to the librarians who have assisted with this project and Claude Ayakawa, David Ayers, Don Beelik, Raymond Caple, Andrew Crews, David C.
