Northpoint
Theatre, San Francisco May 1980, courtesy Dolby Labs
The following is a reference / historical
listing of the North American 70-millimeter presentations of “The Empire
Strikes Back” (aka “Star Wars: Episode V—The Empire Strikes Back”). These
were the cinemas worth seeking out to experience this motion picture.
“The Empire Strikes Back” was among eleven confirmed first-run films
released in 1980 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. At least
one-hundred thirty-six 70mm prints were struck for distribution in North
America and represented 98-100% of the film’s first wave bookings. (The
first-wave launch included a 70mm print inventory of a minimum of 124 and a
maximum of 127, the variation being the result of drive-in bookings where
the presentation details are ambiguous and a cinema which booked two
prints.) A dozen of the 70mm prints were held for bookings during additional
release waves.
The Lucasfilm Ltd. production and 20th Century Fox release — directed by
Irvin Kershner (“The Return of a Man Called Horse,” “Eyes of Laura Mars”)
and starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher — opened May 21st.
The 70mm prints of “Empire” featured magnetic Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“A”
encoded Baby Boom format [Dolby processor setting “42”]) and 2.20:1
full-frame imagery blown up from anamorphic 35mm and provided a superior
projection and sound experience in comparison to the film’s 35mm prints.
Note that some venues screened a 70mm Six-Track Dolby Stereo print utilizing
Dolby-compatible equipment from another manufacturer (EPRAD, Smart, Ultra
Stereo, etc.), and in some instances an exhibitor made a special request for
a 70mm print that lacked Dolby Noise Reduction so that it could be played on
a cinema’s older, pre-Dolby-era sound system.
Over the course of the film’s lengthy release, Fox circulated some 70mm
trailers, including “My Bodyguard,” “Nine to Five” and “The Stunt Man.”
Other studios circulated 70mm trailers during this period, as well (“The
Blues Brothers,” “Flash Gordon,” “Heaven’s Gate,” etc.). Ultimately, any
70mm trailers screened during 70mm presentations of “Empire” varied by venue
and screening.
The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) is included in
parenthesis following the cinema name.
PART 1: FIRST RUN
The following presentations opened May 21st except where noted otherwise.
Not accounted for in this work, several of these locales included a
benefit/charity premiere or invitational preview(s) held between May 17th
and 20th.
It should be noted the 70mm prints of “Empire” differed from its 35mm prints
not only in image and audio quality but also in terms of content. For the
35mm prints, the filmmakers continued working on the film by adding shots,
adding dialogue and music, tweaking some visual effects, and revising some
scene transitions. Because a greater lead time was required by the lab to
prepare what was at the time a record-quantity 70mm print order and because
the 35mm general release would follow a month after the initial
70mm-exclusive opening, the filmmakers capitalized on the extra time to
prepare and finesse the 35mm version of the movie which would play the
majority of cinemas. (EDIT: A 70mm print of “Empire” was recently discovered
which, surprisingly, featured the revisions thought to have been made
exclusively for the film’s 35mm release. This suggests two different 70mm
versions circulated during its release.)

# Presentation not explicitly promoted as 70mm, suggesting it may have been
35mm.
Note that some of the presentations included in this listing may have been
presented in 35mm during the latter week(s) of engagement due to contractual
terms or because of print damage and the distributor’s unwillingness to
supply a 70mm replacement print or because the booking was moved to a
smaller, non-70mm-equipped auditorium within a multiplex. As well, the
reverse scenario may have been true in some cases whereas a booking began
with a 35mm print because the lab was unable to complete the 70mm print
order in time for an opening-day delivery or the exhibitor negotiated a
mid-run switch to 70mm. In such cases, any 35mm portion of the engagement
has been included in the duration figure.
