• in70mm.com is a free magazine-styled website dedicated to the
promotion and preservation of any kind of 70mm film projection, a
high-resolution film format. The website serves as a hub for
contributing enthusiasts, filmmakers, and historians interested in the
technical aspects, history, and cultural significance of 70mm film.
The
following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
engagements of “Tom Sawyer” in North America. These were the cinemas worth
seeking out to experience the best presentation of this motion picture.
“Tom Sawyer” was the lone first-run film released in 1973 with 70mm prints
for selected engagements. The Arthur P. Jacobs production and United Artists
release was directed by Don Taylor (“Escape from the Planet of the Apes,”
“The Final Countdown”) and starred Johnny Whitaker, Celeste Holm, Jeff East
and Warren Oates.
The 70mm prints of “Tom Sawyer” featured six-track stereophonic sound and
full-frame imagery blown up from anamorphic 35mm.
