“The Wild Bunch”: The North American 70mm Engagements
“Unchanged men in a changing land. Out of step, out of place and desperately out of time.”

The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter presentations of “The Wild Bunch” in North America.

The Warner Bros./Seven Arts release was directed by Sam Peckinpah (“Major Dundee,” “Straw Dogs”) and starred William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Edmond O’Brien, Warren Oates, Jaime Sanchez and Ben Johnson.

“The Wild Bunch” was originally released in 1969. The initial release was 35mm in the United States. There were, however, 70mm prints — in a different, longer cut — for selected bookings in key international markets.

The 70mm prints of “The Wild Bunch” featured six-track stereophonic sound and full-frame imagery blown up from anamorphic 35mm.

During the 1995 “Director’s Cut” re-issue, Warner Bros. circulated a 70mm coming-attraction trailer for “Batman Forever.” Other studios circulated 70mm trailers during this period, as well. Ultimately, any 70mm trailers screened during 70mm presentations of “The Wild Bunch” varied by venue and screening.

Historical footnote: The 35mm re-release prints of “The Wild Bunch” included digital sound (Dolby Digital), which accelerated the trend of fewer titles released and re-released with 70mm prints.
