Black Ox is the story of a former hunter-gatherer who loses connection to his spirituality in the process of becoming a farmer and becoming "Japanese" during the nation's period of westernization in the 19th century. The film stars Lee Kang-sheng, known for his work with director Tsai Ming-liang, and Tanaka Min as a Zen monk, with music by Sakamoto Ryuichi. Inspired by "The Oxherding Pictures", which depicts the path to enlightenment using ten poems and drawings of cows, this film directed by Tsuta Tetsuichiro is the first feature-length film in Japan to use in part 70mm film.

In 19th-century Japan, transitioning towards modernization, a man attempts to reconnect with nature while plowing fields with an ox. The film explores the relationship between man and ox, inspired by the “Ten Ox-Herding Pictures,” a series of short poems and illustrations from Zen tradition that depict the path to enlightenment and spiritual awakening.
Director Tetsuichiro Tsuta’s second feature film is a unique epic period piece set in the wilderness of Shikoku, in southwestern Japan, where the director was born. This film is also the first narrative feature in Japanese film history to be shot on 70mm film.
