This is how it started ...

To bring the dramatic realism of stereophonic sound with minimum cost in theatre equipment ... to assure easy and compatible installation ... to eliminate the need of special service and projection techniques ... C. Robert Fine, of Fine Sound, Inc., conceived an idea for a phenomenal sound system that we now know as Perspecta Stereophonic Sound.

Arthur Loew recognized the tremendous merit in Fine's idea because it solved the problems of the exhibitor, distributor and producer, with a compatible sound track ... it was an idea on which the industry could standardize.

For twenty years, Fairchild Recording Equipment Company had been engineering and manufacturing professional-type sound equipment. They had worked with Fine on other developments and had the enthusiasm and know-how to engineer Fine's ideas into a simple, reliable piece of equipment — the Fairchild Perspecta Stereophonic Sound Integrator.

Perspecta Stereophonic Sound

Perspecta Stereophonic Sound — the important new concept in sound for the Motion Picture Industry — so important that it can be quite aptly termed the permanent standardized stereophonic sound system. Why? Well, let's start at the beginning. First came ...

The NEW LOOK in Theatres ...

By replacing the old 1.33 to 1 screen with a wider and higher screen, an eye-filling panorama spreads before the eye of the theatre-goer. It's thrilling to watch the action on these giant screens ... but what about the sound? If a single stage speaker is used, the full entertainment and dramatic possibilities of the large screen are lost. To solve that problem, theatres need ...

The NEW SOUND in Theatres ...

Wide screen sound needs a dimension. As action moves from one side of these king-sized screens to the other, the sound must emanate from the point of action. Otherwise, the full entertainment and dramatic effects are not realized.

Yet, installation costs should be held to a minimum, and the dependable optical sound track, standard in the motion picture industry, should remain unchanged. To allow the motion picture exhibitor these advantages, plus the benefits of stereophonic sound without projector additions, a simple method was required — Perspecta Stereophonic Sound.

This is what it does ...

The idea on which Perspecta Stereophonic Sound operates is amazingly simple. The sound track is identical to the optical sound track that the exhibitor has been using for many years — with the exception that three low-level, low-frequency tones are mixed on the sound track with the speech and music! The continuously varying amplitude of these tones, which can be 'heard' only by the Integrator, act as controls to smoothly vary the volume of each of the three speakers for true stereophonic effect.

When played through a standard, single channel optical sound system, these tones are inaudible. Because of this, the Perspecta release print will play as single sound in any theatre in the world. However, the same Perspecta release print will produce the finest stereophonic sound in a theatre equipped with the Fairchild Perspecta Integrator and multiple speakers and amplifiers.

And this is how it works ...

In a theatre equipped for single channel sound: To equip a theatre for Perspecta Stereophonic Sound, an exhibitor needs only a multiple gang fader, power amplifiers and stage speakers in addition to the Fair-child Integrator. Additional wiring and conduit work on the front wall of his projection room are not required — nor are alterations made to the projection equipment. One Integrator serves all projectors in the booth! And a complete Perspecta Stereophonic System installation can be made in a single day.

In a theatre equipped for magnetic track stereophonic sound: Here installation is even simpler! The only equipment needed is a transfer switch and the Fairchild Perspecta Stereophonic Sound Integrator. And . . . based on the experience of many installations .. . this time should not exceed six hours.

Here's the secret of the Fairchild Perspecta Stereophonic Sound Integrator

This is the Fairchild Perspecta Integrator and its Power Supply, measuring 19" x 16" x 13", that "hears" the amplitude of the three low-frequency tones and, depending on this amplitude continuously modulates the volume of each separate speaker.

This is conventional film with standard optical sound track.

This is magnetic multi-track film. Narrowed sprockets make room for the tracks. The volume of sound for each speaker depends on the sound amplitude recorded on each track.

This is Perspecta Stereophonic film ... identical with conventional film except that three low-frequency tones have been mixed with the speech and music track during recording in the studio. The amplitude of these tones is varied, according to the stereophonic effect desired by the producer.

The Fairchild Integrator first separates the low-frequency tones from the speech and music ... then modulates the volume of each speaker continuously in relation to the amplitude of each low-frequency tone, producing a true, stereophonic effect.

When a release print without the Perspecta low-frequency tones is projected, the Fairchild Integrator automatically deactivates the Perspecta Sound feature and channels the sound through the center speaker. When the Perspecta low-frequency tones reappear the Integrator automatically switches back to stereophonic three channel sound.

Meet Ray Crews: Head of Fairchild's Motion Picture Sound Division, former Supervisor of Sound Recording under Loren Ryder at Paramount. He understands the producers' problems. He knows exhibitors' problems as the result of eighteen years managing and servicing theatre installations. He's your man — knows your problems — has the answers!

Be ready to cash in on the new Perspecta sound releases.

Standardized, Perspecta Stereophonic Sound is here! Fairchild Integrators have had their premiere in Australia, France, Denmark and Japan as well as other countries. and are now showing stereophonic sound with Perspecta release prints. All Loew theatres abroad and in the United States have been or are in the process of being equipped with the Fairchild Integrator for Perspecta Sound.

The first Perspecta Sound releases in the United States will be released shortly by M-G-M. First release from PARAMOUNT in Perspecta Sound will be Bing Crosby's "White Christmas", followed with Perspecta Sound on all other releases. Perspecta Sound releases will be coming from WARNER BROS. and others too.

The Fairchild Perspecta Integrator is a specialized item of theatre sound equipment that will work from any projector into any standard make theatre amplifiers and speakers. Fairchild Recording Equipment Company has the development background on Perspecta Sound, the know-how and production facilities to meet the rising demand for Integrators — and is building service-proven equipment.

Theatres are buying this service-tested piece of equipment now so that they can show this newest and finest stereophonic sound first! Place your order for early delivery with your regular theatre supply dealer.
