The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
re-release engagements of “Napoleon” in the United States and Canada.
“Napoleon” was among eighteen confirmed releases during 1982 with 70mm prints
for selected engagements. The Zoetrope Studios presentation and Universal
re-release was directed by Abel Gance and featured new music by Carmine Coppola.
The restoration was produced by Robert A. Harris and Images Film Archive.
The 70mm prints of “Napoleon” featured Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“A”) and a
mixture of pillarboxed and letterboxed imagery blown up from spherical and
Polyvision/Triptych 35mm.
Screenings of this particular restoration commenced a year prior, in 1981 and in
35mm, in numerous locales and featured live orchestral accompaniment. The
decision to strike 70mm prints with composite audio simplified the presentation.
